Can a debt collector call my employer, relative or neighbor
The debt collector can call your employer, relative or neighbour. However FDCPA law prohibits the debt collector/bill collector to reveal and debt related information to your employer, relative or neighbour. The law prohibits discussing your private debt matter with third parties.
If a debt collector calls you at work, you can tell the debt collector to stop calling you at your office. In-fact, you can also tell the debt collector to stop calling you at all. If the debt collector is still trying to contact your employer, relative or neighbour, it means he is trying to embarrass you.
A debt collector can only talk to your employer about garnishing your wages if he had a favorable court ruling. For this to happen, the debt collector has to legally sue you and have a favorable outcome. With the court document being presented to your employer, the debt collector can garnish your wages. If you have an inkling that the case might get to court, you are better off working on paying off your debts.
Before things get out of whack and your employer, relatives or next door neighbours learn about your debt, it is best to put your debt problems to rest. Frugal living is the key to paying off your debts. Debt consolidation and debt settlement are other programs to help you get out of debt. Credit counselling is also something you might want to look at. Live frugally, pinch every penny you can and pay off your debt.
Learn more about the FDCPA law by browsing the internet and know your rights. Only by being aware about the law, you will be able to tell when a debt collector/bill collector has stepped out of his line. You state attorney general might also have a website to keep you informed about your rights under state law.
