Can debt collector report incorrect information to credit bureau

Can debt collector report incorrect information to credit bureau?
No, a debt collector cannot report incorrect information to the credit bureau. Many debt collectors will use unacceptable tactics to force you to pay up but by law, they cannot report incorrect information to the credit bureau. However, this scare tactic has been used very often by debt collectors.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act was designed to eliminate abusive debt collection practices. As a consumer, you must know your rights under the fair debt collection act and be ready to act if you feel they have been violated. You may want to send a written communication to the debt collection agency about your awareness on the Fair Debt Collection Act and the violations made by the debt collector who handles your case. In many cases, the debt collectors are over worked and are either not aware about the law or use unacceptable practices and try and get away with it.

If you feel an error or incorrect information was reported to your credit bureau, request a free credit report and identify any mistakes in the report if any. Each of the three credit bureau's will have information on how you can communicate any mistakes in the entries to them. It also wouldn't hurt to communicate with a debt attorney to see if you can sue the debt collection agency.

Along with the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, you may want to visit your state collection practices websites and gain insight on your rights while tackling debt collectors. Live frugally, save every penny you can and make attempts to pay off your debt. Only by living frugally, you will be able to slowly and steadily get out of debt and save for your golden years. You may also want to check with debt consolidation and debt managment companies to help you solve your debt problems
