Credit counselors should listen to your debt problems. If they start pitching a solution in the first few minutes, it might not be the right company for you. Instead he should diligently work on getting all the information from you so he can better serve you. If they can't understand your debt problem, how will they be able to help you? Most credit counselors will sell you generic debt counseling solutions without tailoring it to your specific needs.

While choosing a credit counselor, watch for upfront fees and other fees to be paid during the course of credit counseling. Never sign-up for credit counseling if they say they cannot help you unless you pay an upfront fee.

You can always revert to your friendly and helpful Better Business Bureau to see if there are any complaints filed by customers regarding a particular credit counseling agency.

While choosing a credit counselor, avoid the ones who offer quick solutions to your debt concerns. You didn't get into the debt mess overnight so it will take a while to get out as while. Any good debt counselor knows that it takes a while to get out of debt but persistence pays in the long run.

Check if the credit counseling company belongs to the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) or the association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling agencies. This should give you the initial peace of mind while dealing with credit counselors working at the firm.

By carefully following the above advise, you will be able to choose a good credit counselor and save yourself lot of money and grief in the long run.
