How to dispute a credit report entry

If you have recently pulled your credit report and are aware about an entry that is inaccurate, you may want to report it to the credit bureau as soon as possible. You need to be very specific in asking the credit bureau to remove the entry. Specify which entry is incorrect and why you think it is incorrect. If possible, attach copies of receipts you are disputing. To fix or correct entries in your credit report, you need to make it easy for the representative at the credit bureau to resolve your request as quickly as possible.

Chances are, the credit bureau may not remove the reported item in your first try. When this happens, do not get dismayed. Most individuals have reported trying several times before the inaccurate or erroneous entries have been finally removed for good, from their credit reports. Be persistent and firm in your disputes and all your communication needs to be sent via certified mail. This paper trail is critically important in case you have to seek help from an attorney on your credit report case.

Here is a sample credit report dispute letter.
